Most of home fire cases start during the New Year celebration commonly caused by fireworks and candles.

Please take extra care during New Year celebrations.

Tips to keep you safe this New Year

  • If you're making plans to have fun with fireworks, keep them in a sealed box, read the instructions, never go back to a lit firework and keep a bucket of water nearby.

  • Never place candles close to your Christmas tree or furnishings. Don't leave them burning unattended.

  • Switch off electrical appliances when not in use, except when they are designed to stay on. Take extra care with fairy lighting and outside lighting. Always turn off and unplug the lights before you go to bed.

  • Never leave cooking unattended.

  • Check the battery on your smoke alarm each week and use the New Year as a reminder to clean it and get rid of dust.
